Chapter 15

The boy was fast asleep in bed, as was everyone else. All the doors to the house were locked as expected, but this didn’t bother him in the slightest. He was well prepared for such an eventuality. In the adjacent bedroom, he could hear the boy’s parents snoring. They’d been asleep for an hour now—he had been hiding in the shed in their garden they’d forgotten to lock. He had waited until he saw their bedroom light go off, waited an hour or so more, then crept in.

He made his way to the other bedroom, a sticker on the door with a picture of Spiderman on it—the kid’s room. They only had one kid as well—he knew this from stalking the family the last couple of days. He opened the door slowly and quietly, fully prepared to rush over and knock the boy out before he could scream if necessary, but it wasn’t. He was dead to the world. Figuratively for now.

He stood over him, contemplating all the horror that was soon to enter the boy’s world. Pain and hurt he would never have dreamed of. His parents too. If this copycat was trying to provoke him, turn this into a game, he better be prepared. This boy’s death was on him as well, along with what was going to happen to him before death claimed him.

The boy was probably around ten or eleven. Weak, scrawny, barely any flesh on him. All skin and bones and a mop of brown, curly hair. Pathetic. Hardly worth his time. He’d get more meat from a dog. The man produced a length of rope from his pocket and wrapped it tightly around the boy’s throat. The boy opened his eyes, tried to scream and failed. Instead, he pissed himself. The man held the rope there for two to three minutes until the boy passed out. Job done. For now.

The hardest part was getting him into his car. He didn’t live far from this house, but with so many undercover detectives patrolling and journalists, even little old ladies spying from living room windows, it wasn’t easy. It was never easy. Who ever said it was?

Being so small and fragile, it wasn’t so difficult though. This was why he preferred to kill them on-site and leave it for passers-by to find, but a game was being played and he wanted to win. At all costs. He wrapped the kid in his blanket and carried him from the house. Still suspicious, but it was nearly two in the morning and most were asleep. It was raining as well, as always, so most undercover officers were probably drinking coffee or something stronger in an all-nighter somewhere. He arrived home having not seen a single person. Let the fun begin.

He carried the boy upstairs to the spare bedroom. It was completely empty except for a filthy mattress on the floor, no doubt alive with bugs. He had purposefully left the room bare for the simple fact of
